Sir Ken Robinson on TEDTalks

Ken RobinsonSir Ken Robinson is author of Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative, and a leading expert on innovation and human resources. In this talk, he makes an entertaining (and profoundly moving) case for creating an education system that nurtures creativity, rather than undermining it. [Recorded February, 2006 in Monterey, CA. Duration: 20:02]

Great, great talk.

He mentioned a book that he is writing, Epiphanies, about how people discovered their talents. It reminds me of a book I've just finished: Uncommon Genius by Denise Shekerjian. She interviewed 40 McArthur prize winners to find out more about creativity in general. Very good read.

Thanks for the recommendation, Michael! Uncommon Genius sounds fascinating ...

I have watched this presentation many times, I find it hugely motivating, not just because of the content, but the presentation is superb in its ability to touch you in a very human way.
Robinson is a brilliant speaker, much more motivating than the professional life coaches and their cliched sound-bytes.

The talk by Sir Ken Robinson raised some interesting issues for educational leadership. I work in the K-12 sector and firmly believe that, as Sir Ken notes, we have traditionally undercut the emphasis on creativity. Few, if any, of the schools that I have worked with have placed the importance on the arts that has been focused on the math/science/language area.

This talk certainly encouraged and motivated me to spread the word on creativity. If we are to fully realize the abilities of our students, it is necessary to start concentrating on educating the whole being, and not simply filling the child with information from the neck up! And it is vital for those in leadership roles to spearhead this challenge.
